Randolph County E911 Center Can Receive Text to 911 Messages
Winchester – The Randolph County E911 Center added, yesterday, the capabilities to receive and send 911 emergency messages via text from the communications center. Around noon yesterday, working with the telecommunications company Indigital, full texting capabilities were activated in the E911 Center.
“Having the capabilities to receive and send texts via 911 is a critical addition to our Center,” said Chris Shaneyfelt, the director of Randolph County HSEM and E911. Shaneyfelt continued “Often times, people are in a position where they cannot make voice telephone calls out of fear. If they can make that text to 911, we will handle the call just as we would a voice call; sending them the help they need immediately.”
To send a text to the 911 Center, just enter 911 in the telephone number field of your text screen. Then add a message to the message field and send the message. A 911 operator will begin speaking with person within moments. No answers from the person texting will be handled just like a 911 hang-up.
